Knowledge -

Growing up in Pacific Grove knowing hundreds of residents and their families personally and listening to them has taught me volumes about the political values of our citizens. Having a keen interest in our local history and participating in our political history for the past several decades gives me a solid perspective of what political decisions are reasonable for our town.

My job includes teaching leadership skills and requires intimate familiarity with the City Charter and the General Plan and many of the laws which govern those foundation documents.

As a trained Mediator I'm accomplished at bringing conflicting parties to agreement.

As a professional environmental consultant, I’ve compiled the world's largest database of environmentally safe alternatives – that we can make use of right here !

Commitment -

You would be hard pressed to find anyone alive who has spent more hours and expert effort successfully persuading the City of Pacific Grove to make public interest decisions - rather than the financial-interest decisions so common here in the 1990s.

I have attended hundreds of Pacific Grove City Council, Planning Commission, Museum Board, Traffic Commission and other City government meetings beginning in the late 1960s, and participated in and positively influenced dozens and dozens if not hundreds of City decisions since 1995.

Experience -

Over the past 30 years I've participated in hundreds of Pacific Grove Council meetings, and have been invited to and served on numerous local boards and local government committees playing an instrumental role in protecting our town’s environment and public participation.

Achievements:

I helped lead successful efforts for --

    • Clean Elections - Creation of the 2006 Campaign Finance Reform law including being appointed to the Council committee to study it. It is considered one of the strongest in the country.

    • Public Records - I wrote a draft set of Public Records Guidelines that was used as the basis for the City manager's policy released and effective August 2006. It is considered to provide some of the strongest public records access in the state. We now need to turn this set of Guidelines into law.

    • Open Meetings - I have lead most efforts to protect public comment and participation from numerous attacks by Mayors and Council.

    • Expert in environmental science, in 2000 I was appointed to Mayor Fisher's committee which created Pacific Grove's Leaf Blower Law - achieving agreement on a very controversial issue (Pacific Grove's Council unanimously adopted the law we prepared.), and
    • Ending the giant pro-growth Carmel Valley Dam in 1995.

Other Selected Volunteer official governmental and public service --

For more than 30 years as a volunteer, I’ve worked with every City Council, Board of Supervisors, City Manager and Planning Department on our Monterey Peninsula at the County and the Water District, attending and participating in literally thousands of meetings, providing them with guidance on Peninsula history (having grown up here and paid attention), planning laws, public participation laws and environmental science.

  • I've served on local governmental advisory boards including as 2005 elected chair of Carmel River Advisory Committee to our Water Management District (a Brown Act body);
  • Authored AMBAG's 1997 Population Forecast Minority Report section while serving on AMBAG's Technical Advisory Committee.
  • I currently serve on Fort Ord's Community Advisory Board.
  • In 1986-1995 I served as Common Cause Chair for Monterey & Santa Cruz Counties.
  • For more than a decade, I served as a Judge for Monterey County's Science Fair.
  • In the 1980's I served as an officer on Carmel Heritage's Board of Directors and was in charge of its Oral History program.

Local Background

I grew up in Pacific Grove attending Lighthouse Elementary School, the Junior High and High School; studied physics and engineering at MPC (Monterey Peninsula College).

I opened my first business in Pacific Grove in 1983 and for more than a decade I owned and operated a successful software publishing company, supervising all budgeting.

Current Occupation: Executive Director non-profit (environment & democracy protection non-profit called Helping Our Peninsula’s Environment

I'm also an award winning landscape photographer. My images are intended to inspire protection of our magnificent area.

Vision

We live in a spectacular, world class community. We have a right to "Expect More" from our government. We don’t have to reinvent the wheel, plenty of other cities have already done the pioneering work.

We can simply follow hundreds of successful examples. We can reasonably expect world class government right here in Pacific Grove.

o Expect More - Controversy Calming
o Expect More - Participatory Democracy
o Expect More - Environmental & Historic Protection
o Expect More - Government Accountability

On our city council, as always, I will strongly support Open Government and increased Public Participation so together we can make informed decisions that reflect our values.
